  • Slow travel: Why I’m in love with Comporta, Portugal

For me personally, there’s no place I’d rather love to be than the beach. I love to spend my time there, walking and finding peace within myself. Or sit down and read. Or take a nap, hehe. Truly. If I need to think or calm down, if I am not feeling quite like myself or need to let go of things, the ocean is my favorite rhythmic guru. As much as I like the tranquility and authenticity of mountain villages, at sea I feel the possibility to breathe and let things go. The first time I walked along the coastline of Alentejo, I was stunned. It’s so untouched, the sands are soft and the waves are so powerful. Nestled along that coast, Comporta is a tranquil paradise that has been capturing the hearts of discerning travelers with its unspoiled beaches, charming villages, and a unique blend of rustic elegance. I went there about 2 years ago for the first time, and I don’t know why, but the place has left a footprint on my soul. If you’re seeking an escape that combines natural beauty with luxurious touches, Comporta should be at the top of your list. In this article, we'll explore some of the best boutique hotels, local restaurants, and beach clubs that embody the essence of this barefoot luxury destination. Boutique stays 1. Sublime Comporta This is actually the resort where I already stayed 2 times. The first time together with a couple of clients, as we were exploring venues in and around Comporta. I fell soooo in love, that I took my husband there a couple of months later. We went in February 2022. Just a couple of days. We walked along the shores, enjoyed the AMAZING food & wines, played some tennis & relaxed by the fireplace. Their kitchen, wine cellar and cocktail bar are INSANE. Located amidst the pine forests and rice fields, Sublime Comporta offers a serene retreat with a strong emphasis on sustainability and connection to nature, without overdoing it and staying on a high barefoot luxury level. The hotel features elegantly designed rooms, suites, and cabana-style villas. The terrain is so big, that you can actually spend time cycling around it. I particularly liked the privacy of the different types of rooms. There are for example private villa’s with their own pools for families, but also suites with their own decks overlooking nature. The design is quite atypical I believe, I get a South-African interior architectural vibe at some points. Anyway, a place you need to visit if you want to unwind, enjoy gastronomy and discover Comporta at its best. 2. Quinta da Comporta This eco-luxury wellness retreat by architect Miguel Câncio Martins is the epitome of rustic chic. The property includes a stunning infinity pool, an extensive wellness center, and beautifully appointed rooms that exude comfort and sophistication. Quinta da Comporta's farm-to-table restaurant offers an exquisite culinary experience, making it a perfect haven for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. In terms of luxury, I think it can be named in the same breath as Sublime Comporta. I haven’t stayed here, but I’ve been in touch with them before for events. 3. Casas na Areia For a more intimate and unique stay, Casas na Areia offers four whitewashed houses with sandy floors and minimalist décor. Yes, your bed is on the sand! I mean, how much more barefoot luxury can it be?! Located close to the Sado River but only 3 kms away from the beach and center, this boutique property blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, offering a truly immersive experience. The houses are equipped with modern amenities, ensuring a comfortable yet authentic stay. Local restaurants & beach bars to savor 1. Cavalariça I spent my entire youth in competitive horseback riding by the way - and as this is something that keeps running in your blood forever - whenever somebody uses the words horses or stables, I’m already intrigued. Housed in a beautifully converted former stable, Cavalariça offers a contemporary twist on traditional Portuguese cuisine in the heart of Comporta. The menu, designed for sharing, highlights seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, with dishes that blend creativity and authenticity. The restaurant's stylish yet cozy setting, with rustic elements and modern touches, provides a perfect backdrop for a memorable dining experience. Whether you're enjoying a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner, Cavalariça is a must-visit spot for food lovers seeking a taste of Comporta's culinary excellence. 2. Comporta Café I remember: we really just sat ourselves down in a lounge overlooking the ocean with a bottle of wine, the DJ was playing lounge house music, and we sat there for hours and hours until sunset. Situated right on Comporta Beach, Comporta Café is according to me, truly a perfect spot for a leisurely meal with your toes in the sand. The menu focuses on fresh, local ingredients, offering everything from grilled fish (you can pick it yourself from the counter) to hearty salads. Must visit. 3. Sublime Food Circle & Sem Porta I think, first of all, at Sem Porta I had (next to another place in Sicily where I’ll write about soon) the best breakfast ever. I enjoy taking a loooong breakfast in the morning when I’m travelling (unless I’m working abroad on an event or wedding - then a quick cappuccino and nut bar will have to do hehe). The quality of food in Comporta is just, ugh, totally up my alley. I haven’t eaten anything bad. I remember taking a langoustine dish in Sem Porta and couldn’t believe how good that was. It’s truly a must-visit restaurant, even if you’re not staying at Sublime. They also have this intimate restaurant where you’re seated at a counter around the kitchen, amidst the garden where they grow all their ingredients: Food Circle. It wasn’t open when I was there, but I think this is also definetely a must-do when you're in Comporta! 4. JNcQUOI Beach Club Designed by the renowned Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen, JNcQUOI Beach Club in Comporta epitomizes luxury and sophistication. Set against the stunning backdrop of Comporta's pristine beaches, the club features Van Duysen's signature minimalist aesthetic, blending natural materials with elegant design. Visitors can indulge in the exquisite culinary offerings, which highlight fresh, local ingredients, while lounging in chic, comfortable surroundings. JNcQUOI Beach Club offers a perfect blend of relaxation and refinement, making it an essential destination for those looking to experience the best of Comporta's beachside charm. It only opened recently so I didn’t visit it yet, but it’s definetely on my to do list. Anyway, there is SO much more I want to tell you about Comporta. But summarized: if you are into barefoot luxury, gastronomy at its best & pristine beaches, this is your place to be. All photos belong to the correspondent featured hotels/restaurants/beach clubs.
